Overview of the River Indre Walking Tour in France
This unforgettable itinerary includes five scenic walks, most beginning at the enchanting Château de Najade, with a few starting in nearby locations. The routes wind through gentle rolling hills and are suitable for all fitness levels - none are exceptionally challenging.
When doing shorter walks, Linda may offer an optional exercise class either before, during, or after the walk for those wanting a bit more movement. Highlights include a visit to Aubusson’s historic old town, renowned for its intricate tapestries and charming streets, followed by a leisurely lunch. You’ll also tour the home of George Sand, the celebrated French author who lived there with her partner, Chopin, and where he composed some of his most famous music.
As you walk through the rural heart of France, you’ll encounter grasslands, forests, gardens, orchards, heather fields, old mills, and tranquil waterways - landscapes that have inspired kings, poets, and travellers for centuries. Along the way, savour regional cuisine and browse local goods at a traditional village market.
Meals are prepared by one of South Africa’s top chefs, using fresh local ingredients and traditional recipes. At dinner, stories and history behind each dish are shared, adding flavour to every bite.
This is your invitation to experience the soul of authentic France - on foot, with heart, and in unforgettable company.
An average day of the trip
Each day begins with optional stretches and light exercises with Linda, followed by a morning hike lasting between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the distance and terrain. A light lunch is served at the castle after each walk, except for the morning spent in Aubusson.
Afternoons are yours to enjoy - rest beneath the trees, take a refreshing dip in the natural pool, or simply soak up the tranquillity. Dinner is served in the castle most evenings, with one special night out at a nearby restaurant, easily reached on foot. House wine is included with lunch and dinner, though you're welcome to select your own from the wine list if you prefer (for your own account).
How difficult is the walk?
Let’s just say - these walks won’t leave you gasping for air or clinging to a hiking pole like it’s a lifeline. They’re gentle, scenic, and designed to be enjoyed, not endured. And when the route’s a little shorter, Linda may sprinkle in some extra movement - think stretches, toning, or spontaneous tree-hugging lunges - for those who want to feel fabulously energised. It’s all about balance: a bit of effort, a lot of joy, and plenty of laughs along the way.
Here’s what it might involve:
