Tabata training involves 20 seconds of high-intensity exercises followed by 10 seconds of rest, making it an ideal form of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) to supercharge your fat burning.
The workout will focus on various jumping exercises, designed to elevate your heart rate and challenge your muscles. If you are a beginner or have any knee, back, or ankle issues, don’t worry, I will provide modifications throughout the session. For those seeking an extra challenge, you can follow along with Armin in the video.
Before you start the video, please read “On today’s workout video” below.
Advantages of High-Intensity Session
One of the primary advantages of a high-intensity session like Tabata is the increased demand for oxygen during the intense intervals. This results in more oxygen being taken in during the recovery periods compared to less intense exercises. The after-burn effect from this workout means you’ll continue to burn fat even after you’ve finished exercising. Additionally, high-intensity workouts save you time, as the short intervals make the overall exercise session much shorter than traditional cardio sessions.
On today’s workout video
No equipment needed
8 Exercises
Fast pace for 20 seconds; rest for 10 seconds
The 8 exercises will take you 4 minutes
Beginners: Aim for one or two rounds
Intermediate: Push yourself with three or four rounds
Advanced: Challenge your limits with five or six rounds
I suggest you watch the video first to be prepared.
In today’s world, most of us sit around for the majority of the day looking at screens, in offices or working from home. This trend is now bigger than ever thanks to the pandemic that has just passed.
Research has shown that sitting for extended periods can have detrimental effects on your health, increasing the risk of various chronic conditions and even shortening our lifespan. In this article, I’ll break down some of the negative effects of prolonged sitting, and give you possible solutions to this nasty problem.
Detrimental Health Effects of Prolonged Sitting:
1. Increased Risk of Obesity
Prolonged sitting leads to a decrease in energy expenditure, making it easier to consume more calories than we burn. This imbalance can contribute to weight gain and obesity, which, in turn, is linked to various health issues, including diabetes and heart disease.
2. Cardiovascular Problems
Sitting for long periods can negatively impact heart health. Studies have indicated that a sedentary lifestyle is associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease, as well as high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.
3. Muscular Weakness and Stiffness
Remaining seated for extended periods can lead to muscle stiffness, particularly in the hips and lower back. Over time, these muscles can weaken, affecting posture and increasing the likelihood of back pain.
4. Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes
Prolonged sitting has been linked to insulin resistance and an increased risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Regular movement helps improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.
5. Mental Health Decline
Spending too much time sitting can have negative effects on mental well-being, leading to increased feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression. Exercise, on the other hand, promotes the release of endorphins, which can improve mood and reduce stress.
Regular physical activity and movement play a crucial role in maintaining good health and preventing various chronic conditions. By incorporating exercise into your daily routine, you can reap numerous benefits that positively impact your physical and mental well-being. Here are some of the benefits:
1. Improved Cardiovascular Health
Regular exercise strengthens the heart and improves blood circulation, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
2. Weight Management
Physical activity helps burn calories and maintain a healthy weight, promoting overall wellness.
3. Enhanced Mental Well-being
Exercise stimulates the release of feel-good neurotransmitters, boosting mood and reducing stress and anxiety.
4. Increased Energy and Productivity
Regular movement boosts energy levels and enhances focus, leading to increased productivity in daily tasks.
5. Better Sleep
Engaging in regular physical activity can improve sleep quality, leaving you feeling refreshed and energized.
Easy Tips to Incorporate More Movement into Daily Life:
Take a walk during TV commercial breaks or use them for simple stretches.
Utilize stairs instead of elevators or escalators whenever possible.
Incorporate standing or walking meetings at work to break up prolonged sitting.
Use the LK Fitness App to select exercises and create a personalised workout routine. To get the LK Fitness App, click here.
Make it easy for yourself, try exercises like this coffee table workout while watching TV:
Conclusion
Prioritising physical activity in our daily lives not only improves our physical health but also enhances our mental well-being. By taking small steps to incorporate movement into our routines, such as adopting a coffee table workout or taking short walks during TV time, we can make significant strides toward a healthier, more vibrant life. Remember, every little movement counts, and your future self will thank you for the positive changes you make today.
Morning Sunlight: My Secret to Better Sleep and a Healthier Life
Backed By Science
Are you feeling tired and sluggish, struggling to fall asleep at night or finding it hard to manage stress levels? Well, you might want to try viewing early morning sunlight! According to Professor Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist and professor of neurobiology at Stanford University, exposure to early morning sunlight can have a range of benefits for your physical and mental health.
Here are some of the benefits of viewing early morning sunlight:
Improves quality of sleep:
Exposure to early morning sunlight helps your brain set its internal clock for the day. Natural light tells your body that it’s time to wake up, which lowers leftover melatonin and supports a healthy rise in cortisol during the first hour after waking. This early cortisol peak helps you feel alert and energised, and it also allows cortisol to drop smoothly later in the afternoon and evening. When this rhythm is stable, your body starts producing melatonin at the right time at night, helping you fall asleep more easily and enjoy deeper, more restorative sleep.
Improves your mood:
Exposure to natural sunlight triggers the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood and promotes feelings of happiness and well-being. Adequate levels of serotonin can help reduce anxiety and stress, which are common factors that negatively impact mood.
Exposure to early morning sunlight has been shown to reduce stress levels by promoting feelings of calmness and relaxation. This can help lower cortisol levels (later in the day) which is the hormone responsible for stress.
Boosts immune function:
Exposure to early morning sunlight can help boost the immune system in several ways, including increasing the production of white blood cells, regulating the immune response, and reducing inflammation. It can also improve sleep quality, which is essential for maintaining a healthy immune system.
Can it Help Weight Loss?
Research has found that the regulation of our circadian rhythms through morning sunlight exposure may improve our metabolism and aid in weight loss. The production of vitamin D from sun exposure has also been linked to weight loss and a lower risk of obesity. However, it’s important to note that sunlight exposure alone is not a magic solution for weight loss and should be combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
To read more about Prof. Huberman’s astonishing findings, click here.
How to do it:
On a sunny morning, get outside for 5-10 minutes. You can do more if you have time, and feel free to use the time outside to exercise, walk, eat a light breakfast, or journal in the sunlight. You can wear your contact lenses, or reading glasses, but not sunglasses. Even on overcast days, there is still enough sunlight to trigger positive effects, but you’ll need to increase the time outside to at least 15-20 minutes. If it’s dark when you wake up or if the weather prevents you from going outside, flip on as many bright indoor artificial lights as possible, then get outside as soon as the sun is out.
Be Careful
It’s important to note that Professor Andrew Huberman does not recommend looking directly at the sun at any time, including early in the morning. Doing so can cause serious eye damage, including solar retinopathy, which can lead to permanent vision loss.
Final Verdict
I’ve found it to be the perfect way for me to start my days. Exposure to early morning sunlight can have several benefits for your physical and mental health. It’s a simple and easy way to improve sleep quality, boost mood, reduce stress, and strengthen the immune system. So, get outside and soak up some rays (safely)!
