The Surprising Benefits of Cold Showers: Why You Should Give Them a Try

The Surprising Benefits of Cold Showers: Why You Should Give Them a Try

I still remember the first time I took a cold shower. I just completed my HIIT workout and was sweating profusely. The thought of a cold shower sounded refreshing.

As I stepped into the shower, I braced myself for the icy shock that awaited me. The cold water hit my skin, and for a moment, I couldn’t breathe. But as I continued to stand there, something remarkable happened.

I started to feel alive. My mind became sharper, and I felt energized. It was as if the cold water was waking up every cell in my body. From that moment on, I was hooked.

The Benefits

I soon learned that there were many physical and mental benefits to taking cold showers. I delved deeper into the science behind it through Prof. Andrew Huberman, a Neuroscientist at Stanford and the host of the popular podcast “Huberman Lab.” I discovered that cold showers can activate the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body’s “fight or flight” response. This activation can increase alertness, energy, and focus, and may also have a positive impact on mood and mental health. Enduring the discomfort of the cold water can help to build mental and emotional resilience, which can be beneficial in other areas of life as well.

Taking cold showers also has physical benefits. The cold water causes the blood vessels to constrict, which increases the rate of blood flow when the body warms up again. This increased blood flow can also enhance the immune system, as it allows for better distribution of immune cells throughout the body. In addition, cold showers can help reduce inflammation and promote recovery after physical activity.

Potential Negative Effects

Cold showers are not without potential negative effects. For people with pre-existing heart conditions, taking a cold shower can cause an increase in heart rate, which can be dangerous. And for those with respiratory conditions, such as asthma, cold showers can cause shortness of breath or coughing.

Does it Help Weight Loss?

While cold showers have been linked to a variety of physical and mental benefits, there is no clear evidence to suggest that they directly impact weight loss. While exposure to cold temperatures can increase the body’s metabolic rate, leading to a small increase in calorie burning, the effect is not significant enough to cause significant weight loss on its own. That said, incorporating cold showers into a healthy lifestyle may help support weight loss efforts by promoting overall physical and mental well-being.

Final Verdict

Despite these potential risks, I have continued to take cold showers regularly. The physical and mental benefits are just too great to ignore. Not only do I feel more alert and focused, but my skin and hair are also healthier. And perhaps most importantly, I have developed a sense of mental and emotional resilience that carries over into other areas of my life.

So if you’re looking for a way to boost your health and well-being, I highly recommend giving cold showers a try. It may be uncomfortable at first, but trust me, the rewards are well worth it.

Alcohol and Weight Loss: What You Need to Know

Alcohol and Weight Loss: What You Need to Know

Most of us know the classic weight loss advice: eat fewer calories than you burn.
But here is the part many people overlook. Not all calories behave the same in your body. For instance, 300 calories you get from broccoli will affect your body differently than 300 calories you get from cake. But what about 300 calories from your favourite beer, wine, or cocktail?

Alcohol has its own unique effects. Some of these can quietly sabotage your weight, your energy, your sleep, and even your motivation to exercise. If you have been eating well and staying active but still feel stuck, it may be time to look at what is in your glass.

Why Alcohol Makes Weight Loss More Difficult

Alcohol is not just “empty calories”. It affects your body in several ways that make fat loss more difficult, even if you drink moderately.

1. Your body burns alcohol first, and stores the rest

Your liver prioritises breaking down alcohol before anything else.
This slows down fat burning and makes sugar processing less efficient.

Dr Joshua Scott – a primary care sports medicine physician –  explains that alcohol has a higher calorie density than most foods, and it also reduces your ability to burn calories effectively.

2. It interferes with nutrient absorption

Alcohol reduces how well your body absorbs vitamins and minerals. These nutrients support metabolism, energy, and recovery, so poor absorption can affect your progress.

3. It affects your muscles

Alcohol inhibits calcium absorption in muscle cells. This can lead to cramping and weaker performance during workouts.

4. It dehydrates you

Alcohol is a diuretic. Dehydration affects digestion, energy levels, skin, and even your appetite signals.

5. It lowers inhibitions around food

A drink or two can make it much harder to stick to your normal eating habits.
This is why late night snacking or fast food often follows a night out.

6. It disrupts your sleep

Many people use alcohol to fall asleep, but it reduces the amount of deep, restorative sleep you get.
It also disrupts REM cycles and can worsen breathing patterns.

Poor sleep leads to lower energy, stronger cravings, reduced motivation to exercise, and a slower metabolism. This creates a cycle that can keep you from reaching your goals.

What Counts as Moderate Drinking

Most guidelines define moderate drinking as:

  • Women: up to one drink per day
  • Men: up to two drinks per day

A standard drink is:

  • 355 ml beer
  • 147 ml wine
  • 44 ml spirits

Restaurant servings are often larger, so it is easy to drink more than you realise.

Low Calorie Alcohol Options

If you choose to drink, these options are lighter on calories and commonly available in South Africa:

  • Light beer: about 100 calories per 355 ml
  • Gin with sugar free tonic: about 110 calories
  • Red or white wine: about 120 to 125 calories per 147 ml
  • Whiskey with soda or on ice: about 105 calories

High Calorie Drinks to Limit

These drinks can push your calorie intake up very quickly:

  • Margarita: about 220 to 230 calories
  • Piña colada: about 440 calories
  • Long Island iced tea: about 250 to 260 calories
  • Craft beer: 150 to 400 calories depending on alcohol content

Do You Need to Quit Alcohol to Lose Weight

Not necessarily.
Most experts agree that you do not need to stop drinking completely to see results.

However, if your weight loss has stalled, or you are struggling with low energy, cravings, or poor sleep, it may be worth trying a dry week or a dry month. Many people notice better sleep, fewer cravings, more stable energy, improved workouts, and renewed weight loss.

When you start drinking again, pay attention to how it affects your body, your mood, and your habits.

The Bottom Line

Alcohol can fit into a healthy lifestyle, but it is not neutral.
It affects your metabolism, sleep, appetite, and energy in ways that can slow your progress.

By choosing smarter drinks, drinking mindfully, and understanding how alcohol interacts with your body, you can enjoy a drink without derailing your goals.

Small changes can make a big difference.

Fitness level: You should be able to walk for 2 to 3 hours each day. Let’s just say – these walks won’t leave you gasping for air or clinging to a hiking pole like it’s a lifeline. They’re gentle, scenic, and designed to be enjoyed, not endured. And when the route’s a little shorter, Linda may sprinkle in some extra movement – think stretches, toning, or spontaneous tree-hugging lunges – for those who want to feel fabulously energised. It’s all about balance: a bit of effort, a lot of joy, and plenty of laughs along the way.

Tour at a glance: By Dr Gianni Stangellini of Italy (guide and the tour organiser):

Overview on Puglia-Alberobello-Matera Walking Tour

From the sun-kissed Adriatic coast to ancient olive groves and the magical stone city of Matera, our brand-new Puglia 2026 itinerary is ready to welcome you on a journey you’ll never forget.

Here’s a taste of what awaits you:

Easy walks!! We have rated this with 2- (on a scale from1 to 5), so you can do it!
hands-on cooking class where you’ll roll your own orecchiette and bake traditional focaccia
Guided walks through Bari’s old town, the whitewashed alleys of Ostuni, and the world-famous trulli of Alberobello
Breathtaking views over Polignano a Mare and Monopoli’s cathedral treasures
Strolling under centuries-old olive trees and tasting golden Puglian olive oil at a traditional masseria
Wine tasting at a modern winery among the hills
Two unforgettable days in Matera, Italy’s breathtaking “stone city”:
• Explore the UNESCO-listed Sassi cave dwellings with an expert local guide
• Learn the secrets of Matera’s traditional bread
• Enjoy a magical sunset hike across the Murgia plateau, with sweeping views of the ancient landscape
• Celebrate with a farewell dinner on a panoramic terrace in the heart of the Sassi

An average day of the trip

On a typical day, you’ll have the option to start with light stretches and exercises with Linda Kriel (optional 😁), followed by a morning hike/walk with your guide lasting about 3 hours. We then stop at a local restaurant or farmhouse for lunch (lasting approximately 1.5 hours), where you’ll enjoy delicious local food and wines.

In the afternoon, there might be additional walking or a town stroll. Around 4:30 or 5:00 pm, your guide will accompany you back to the hotel. Before dinner, you’ll have a couple of hours to rest.

Dinner will be served in a restaurant in town, easily reachable on foot. Local wine, our house vino della casa, is always included for lunch or dinner, but you’re welcome to buy your own wine from the wine list if you prefer.

How difficult is the walk?

A walk rating of 2− (two minus) on a scale from 1 to 5 typically indicates a walk that is slightly more challenging than very easy, but still quite manageable for most people. Here’s what it might involve:

  • Terrain: Mostly flat or gently undulating, with well-maintained paths. Any uneven or rough sections would be minimal and short.
  • Distance: Usually on the shorter side — around 3 to 4 miles (4.5–5.5 km), depending on the environment.
  • Elevation gain: Very limited. There might be a few mild slopes, but no real climbs or descents to speak of.
  • Skill level: Suitable for beginners, casual walkers, families, or anyone looking for a light outing with very little effort required. Fit people can walk fast and even take a jog, or do some exercises with Linda while waiting for the others to catch up.

In short, a 2− rating reflects a walk that is just a step up from the easiest level, offering a bit of variety without introducing any real difficulty.

Included:
